The Urdang

History at The Old Finsbury Town Hall
In 1857, a vestry hall was opened for the parish of Clerkenwell. In 1892, the Clerkenwell Vestry decided that larger premises were needed and the new vestry hall was opened in 1895. When the Metropolitan Borough of Finsbury was formed in 1900, the municipal office of Clerkenwell was absorbed and the building became the Finsbury Town Hall.

The Town Hall provided a focal point for the municipal life in Finsbury. Additionally the first floor housed the Council Chamber and the public halls were used for civic functions such as weddings and public hire.

In 1965 the newly extended Islington Council absorbed the municipal administration of the Finsbury Council. From this point on the main function of the Town Hall became that of registrar for Islington, administering family records for the area. June 2003 saw this final Council function removed to the Islington Town Hall in Upper Street and the doors of the Finsbury Town Hall were closed.

Today
In October 2005 the Finsbury Town Hall was acquired by The Urdang Academy. A long established performing arts school that was formerly based in Covent Garden. Urdang restored the building before relocating in January 2007. Urdang have also successfully re-licensed this splendid landmark for events and civil ceremonies.

Once again, The Urdang, Finsbury Town Hall is becoming an increasingly popular wedding venue. This is due to its breath taking Art Nouveau influenced Great Hall, Council Chamber, Minor Hall and the mahogany Wedding room which are also ideal for receptions. This wonderfully refurbished building will provide the perfect setting for any occasion.
